Compare and Contrast â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper† and â€Å"No Name Woman† â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper† tells the story of the narrator’s personal battle with after-birth depression and the disastrous rest cure treatment she received. Living during the restrictive Victorian period, the narrator experienced firsthand the frustrating limitations placed on women in her era, many of whom were victimized by society’s complete misunderstanding of postpartum depression and other psychological infirmities. On the other hand, â€Å"No Name Woman† tells the story of Maxine Hong Kingston’s recall of the events of her aunts life in the vague world of her Chinese roots. The story is of her aunt who was persecuted for having an illegitimate child as a result of an affair†¦show more content†¦The mental struggle and impetuous behavior about her unhappiness make her stretch out her feelings onto her surroundings, especially the wallpaper, which becomes a symbolic feature of her situation. She feels sad whenever she thinks about he r condition of both depression and condition in general within her oppressive marriage. In â€Å"No Name Woman,† the theme of silence starts with the elementary words of the memoir stating you must not tell anyone. This statement is ironic because Kingston is in fact telling everyone, giving voice to Chinese customs and the lives that are foregone. As written in her memoir, she states, â€Å"You must not tell anyone,† my mother said, â€Å"what I am about to tell you. In China your father had a sister who killed herself. She jumped into the family well. We say that your father has all brothers because it is as if she had never been born.† (Deshazer 308). It is especially notable and ironic that the memoir begins with the phrase â€Å"You must not tell anyone.† Her effort in No Name Woman is to write about that which is never said; her unnamed dead aunt, and the outrageous behaviors in her mother’s Chinese village. Kingston was not necessarily silenced direct by a male figure; however, the words said by her mother â€Å"You must not te ll anyone† is a representation of Kingston father’s authorization voice through her mother’s explanation.
